Back in the 80's there was a new show on TV. Miami Vice. As a twenty something gear head the Wellcraft Scarab on that show spun my bolts. I thought one day I have to have something like that!Fast forward to summer of 1998 when we were in Osage Beach, Missouri. Lake of the Ozarks on vacation. Driving between locations we saw a Formula boat parked on the side of the road with a trailer for sale. We called the number and setup a meeting. We met the owners at some private docks and went for a ride. The boat looked and rode nice but seemed low on power. Top speed around 40 mph. The owner informed us he was told the boat needed engines. No wonder the asking price was so good. We bought her after some negotiations and parked her at our friend's dock in Osage Beach. Drove around the next day and found the motors had gone through a quart of oil each by days end. No big shakes. Figured I would go through them anyway when we bought the boat. That night I started thinking about my old high school power mechanics teacher. When I was I freshman and I first had a class with him, one of the first things he said was "boys, if you learn nothing else in this class, it's Marvel Mystery Oil". I remember thinking to myself "well alrighty then". Seemed like a strange way to start a school year. He continued on about the merits of the oil and how good it was at freeing up stuck mechanisms and frozen engines. I started thinking about the boat engines and had been told the boat had sat for a very long time. Possibly the piston rings were stuck. So I went to Walmart that evening and loaded up on this Marvel Mystery Oil. Got back to the dock and poured a few of the large bottles into the fuel tank which was low. Probably only about 40 gallons. I also poured a quart into each engine which needed a quart anyway. Continued on with our vacation and added Marvel Mystery Oil any time we got fuel. By the end of the week the boat picked up 20 MPH and didn't use oil! We bought the boat with close to 800 hours on her and now 23 years later she has the same engines and we are at about 1,250 hours. And no oil usage for the whole season. I still occasionally add some Marvel Mystery Oil every season. Especially at spring startup. It's a great upper cylinder lubricant.
She's been a great family member and currently is undergoing a restoration that can be seen on another page of this site.
